Environmental facts and figures

Below are some facts and figures on sustainability related matters at Birkbeck.

Energy: Over the last five years, the energy use and CO2 emissions in the College has continued to rise. The good news is that there has been a slight reduction from 2006/7 to 2007/8. The annual utility usage now stands at about 11.3m kWh.

Waste: Since 2004/5, the amount of waste produced has decreased from 415 tonnes to 216 tonnes, and the proportion of landfill waste has been reduced from 93% of the total down to less than 20%.

Birkbeck now weighs bagged waste three times a week so we can determine more accurately the number of kilograms we are recycling and the amount we are sending to landfill. We will be putting the latest figures here shortly. We also plan to have a "zero landfill" week when we try to send nothing to landfill for a whole week. Details to follow.

See the Environment Management Group Annual Report for more detailed figures.
