Programme Reports

Programme Reporting is an important Quality Assurance/Enhancement process of the College which reflects that of internal review and QAA guidelines and is intended to evaluate Birkbeck's "management of the security of the academic standards of its awards and of the quality of the learning opportunities it provides to enable students to achieve those standards" (QAA Handbook for Institutional audit: England and Northern Ireland, 2009).  At Birkbeck this process has the following objectives:

a)       to assure the College that the academic standards of programmes and the quality of the student learning experience are maintained and that there is continuing improvement and development of the programme during this time;

b)       to provide a process for innovations in provision to be disseminated to the wider College Community as well as matters requiring consideration by Departments, School, College committees or central College postholders;

c)       to provide an annual reflective process to Programme Teams, Departments and Schools which helps to inform periodic internal review.

Programme Reports 2010/11

The Programme Reports process has been revised for 2010/11.  The new process has the following features:

  1. Biennial report - full report in 1st year (reporting on 10/11) and interim reports in 2nd year (reporting on 11/12)

  2. Designed for programmes to be 'clustered' together into a single report; allowing for a smaller number of reports addressing a common set of issues.

  3. The focus of the reports intended to be enhancement of teaching and learning and not to repeat information that is captured elsewhere, e.g. external examiner report responses.

  4. Sections linked to QAA headings used for internal review so reports can be usefully utilised as key documents in internal reviews and for the internal review SED.

  5. Reporting process moved earlier in the academic year to ensure currency of information.

COMPLETION OF REPORTS
Reports should be compiled by nominated cluster coordinators for a set of programmes.  It is expected that UG programmes and PG programmes will be clustered in separate reports

  • Heads of Departments should consult with programme directors and agree appropriate clusters and cluster coordinators.  Heads of Department are requested to notify the QEV team of the agreed cluster groups and coordinators by 1st September 2011 at the latest.
  • Reports should be completed to provide the College TQEC (Teaching Quality Enhancement Committee) with an assurance that academic standards are being maintained and an understanding of key developments and issues across the cluster of programmes in the report.
  • Reports should be completed with the emphasis on areas of enhancement that have been implemented or issues that have been identified that could be improved.
  • Please only complete the sections in which there is a change, enhancement or development to be reported on, there is not an obligation for all sections of the report to be completed.
  • Statistics on completion will be available from August 2011.

STATISTICS
To be able to comment on trends in relation to student recruitment and achievement (section 4), a set of statistical reports will be made available.  Data will be made available as spreadsheets that can be filtered as required.

For the purposes of comparing data for the report, data will be provided for previous years and you will be able to filter data by College, School, Department and specific  programmes for comparison of trends.

  • Data for recruitment and admissions on all programmes (Cert/UG/PG) will be available from 1st August 2011
  • Data on Certificate completion will be available from 1st October 2011
  • Data on PG completion will be available from 1st December 2011

SUBMISSION OF REPORTS
Reports should be submitted to the Quality Enhancement and Validation team by the following deadlines, so that reports can be prepared and circulated to TQEC scrutiny panels

  • UG reports (Certs/BA/BSc) - 30th October 2011
  • PG reports (MA/MSc) - 23rd December 2011
