Wireless and Mobile Computing
IT Services operate an expanding wireless network serving teaching and open access public areas of the College, and many teaching rooms have live network ports to which members of the College may connect.
A description of the service is available following the links on the left, and coverage is also indicated. A leaflet describing the service and what users should expect is also available. The service is designed for users to be able to turn up and use without any intervention from ITS, but there are a number of steps that users should consider to ensure that use of the service is trouble free:
- Ensure that any drivers for wireless adaptors are up to date.
- Ensure that your operating system is patched up to date.
- Ensure that you have anti-virus software installed.
The network name (SSID) for wireless devices is Birkbeck-WAM.
There are troubleshooting tips available as you connect to the service, but if you encounter problems, please visit the ITS Reception and Help Desk with your equipment.
For staff and students visiting other HE institutions, Birkbeck is investigating the Janet Roaming Service for implementation before Christmas 2007, and connecting to the Eduroam wireless network at the visited institutions may allow access to the network using your ITS username and password.
