Sam joined Birkbeck in 2005 as a research officer whose main interest lies in the application of GIS and spatial analysis. He is responsible for mapping as well as spatial and statistical analysis of geographical datasets for a variety of projects including the Countryside Agency's Rural Services Survey, the National Evaluation of Sure Start, and ongoing work for the Rural Evidence Research Centre and the Centre for Applied Economic Geography. Sam also contributes for undergraduate and postgraduate GIS teaching.
Sam's career in the geographical arena began in 2000 when he graduated from the University of Edinburgh (BSc Geography). After a brief spell working in the oil industry in Canada he gained an MSc in Geographical Information Science at the University of Nottingham. His first step into academia was as a research assistant at the University of Leicester where he was involved with the Home Office's National Evaluation of CCTV.
As well as working as a research officer Sam has been involved with projects for the Royal Geographical Society, Neighbourhood Knowledge Management and has given training courses in GIS and crime analysis.
